Farm Sanctuary
P.O. Box 150
Watkins Glen, NY 14891
Description:
Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming and to encourage a new awareness and understanding about 'farm animals.' At Farm Sanctuary, these animals are our friends, not our food. We started out by visiting farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses to document conditions, and we found animals literally left for dead. Hilda, a sheep found on a pile of dead animals behind Lancaster Stockyards, was the first animal to be rescued by Farm Sanctuary. She lived with us for more than a decade, and died of old age. Through the years, we have rescued thousands of animals, and educated millions of people about their plight. People are shocked to learn about the intolerable conditions that are commonplace on today's industrialized farms. Our rescue and education work continues, as we advocate for laws and policies to prevent suffering and promote compassion. We are reaching out to legislators and businesses, and working to bring about institutional reforms.

Fun news! Anyone who voted with FS during the round they won will probably remember Ashley, our sweet FS Intern friend who shared her wonderful YouTube video with us. She was just announced the winner of the VegNews January Giveaway contest, "How Do You Show Your Veggie Pride?" As her answer, Ashley submitted her video! Here's the blurb from VegNews (w/o her last name)...

"January VegNewsletter Giveaway Winner!

Speaking of charmed champions, a big congratulations goes out to Ashley, who responded to our question on how she shows her veggie pride. A former Farm Sanctuary intern, Ashley made a slideshow of photos from her time there, and posted the production on YouTube. Her work has already been viewed more than 900 times, which means that, potentially, there are 900 more people who know about the work that Farm Sanctuary does. With so many videos of animal abuse coming from various news sources, it's incredibly refreshing to see happy, healthy animals being cared for so well. Enjoy!

For her efforts, Ashley has earned a signed copy of the bestseller Skinny Bitch in the Kitch!"

Congratulations, Ashley!!! :-)

By the way, for all of you who love Farm Sanctuary and the work they do, check out Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary. They're in Colorado and much smaller, doing the same work. Very lovely people and very lucky critters there! They have no hope of winning this round, I'm just trying to bring attention to them, especially among people who support FS. :-) Thanks!

Hi, Isma! Welcome to the US! :-)

Farm Sanctuary was declared the winner of that last round (so is ineligible to win this one, please vote for other causes you believe in and raise awareness about the small, less well-known and well-funded ones and help spread the wealth around!) But Marc (the site administrator) was out of town until last night (Monday night)and I think he just hasn't had time to tally and post the amount of the winning purse yet. So keep checking! :-)
